Visiting: Temple of Artemis, Ephesus, House of Virgin Mary, Basilica of St. John

Duration: 7 hours

Today you will visit some of the Christian faith's most sacred sights in the region surrounding Selcuk. As you depart Izmir Harbor, look for a guide holding your name placard for easy recognition.

Ephesus and the Temple of Artemis

We will begin at the Temple of Artemis which dates back to the 6th century BC and is listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Today its remaining large marble column bases are scattered throughout an overgrown swamp land, but you can still get a sense of its former grandeur and they are among the oldest relics in the area. The Temple of Artemis was once part of the large Roman city of Ephesus which we will also visit, touring the Temple of Hadrian, the Temple of Domitian and the large theater where it is believed St Paul once preached. The beautifully reconstructed Celsius Library with its ornate marble carvings is among its most famous buildings.

House of the Virgin Mary
Not far from Ephesus lies The House of the Virgin Mary - a small stone cottage where the Mother of Christ is believed to have spent her final years. Today it is a popular pilgrimage site with people of all faiths coming to pay their respects and take in the magnificent views on offer.

Basilica of St. John
Back down in the center of Selcuk lies the Basilica of St John. While little is known about this church, it is believed to have been built in 565 AD on the tomb of St John and was considered one of the most sacred churches of its time.

NOTE!
Do not miss a chance to visit the Terrace Houses section which is located inside the Ancient City of Ephesus and has an extra entrance fee of 15 USD per person. Its oldest building, "The houses of the rich Romans", dates back to the 1st century BC and still exhibits well-preserved mosaics and frescoes, as well as a famous water-running and heating system made from clay pipes. Please be aware that in this section there are over 100 stairs so we do not recommend it for people with physical disabilities. It takes a minimum of 30 minutes to visit
