One of the most spectacular islands in the Cyclades, Santorini was the site of a violent eruption around 1450 BC that shaped its rugged landscapes around an underwater caldera. Santorini is home to the picturesque towns of Fira and Oia, which both cling to the cliff tops overlooking the Aegean Sea, as well as dramatic volcanic beaches, ancient archaeological sites and a scattering of excellent wineries.
Cruise ships anchor just off Santorini Island and tender passengers to the small port that lies below Fira. You can ride the funicular up to the town or opt to take the steep, winding steps either on foot or by donkey.
Be sure to spend an afternoon exploring the cobblestone streets of Fira, home to whitewashed houses, 9th-century ruins, ancient Orthodox churches and a small archaeological museum. There are plenty of cliff top restaurants and cafes where you can soak up the views and plenty of artisan and handicraft boutiques to explore.
Don’t miss a visit to beautiful Oia to wander through its leafy squares and art galleries, then follow one of the pathways that lead down to the black sand volcanic beaches. You can also make a day trip to one of the beaches at Kamari that lie to the southeast or cruise to the tiny volcanic island of Palaia Kameni that is renowned for its therapeutic mud baths.
Considered Greek’s answer to Pompeii, the partially excavated archaeological site at Akrotiri is a “must†for history buffs, having been covered by a sea of lava during the 1450 BC eruption. Wine connoisseurs can tour the ten different wineries that comprise Santorini’s “Wine Roadâ€, ending with an unforgettable sunset at Amoudi.
